Was established in 1983 as a successor to the institute of African Studies established in 1962. It has as its mandate the preservation and promotion of African Cultural heritage as well as the studies of problems relating to adaptation and integration of African cultural valves to the experience and daily life of the African in the contemporary world.

The martins Aworinlewo Odeyemi museum of antiquities and contemporary African Art building was donated by Chief Joshua Agboola Odeyemi FCA (the Obasewa of Ife, Bobajiro of Iloko-Ijesa and National President of NACCIMA), to the Obafemi Awolowo University in memory of his late father, after whom the museum is named.
